WASHINGTON, Dec. 7 --Celebrex (celecoxib) is one of a number of pain relievers that can help people who are at increased risk of heart disease. The drug, which is used to treat arthritis pain, has been linked with a small increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart-related deaths.
The study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American College of Cardiology, found that use of celecoxib to treat chronic pain may increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients with heart disease.
The study, published in the November 2010 issue ofCirculation, assessed the risk of heart attacks, strokes and heart-related death in patients who were prescribed celecoxib or who were taking an NSAID or other NSAID drug. Those who were taking an NSAID had a slightly increased risk of heart attacks and strokes compared with those who were taking an NSAID and not taking an NSAID. The results were not statistically significant, according to the study.
The results show that people who are taking NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) for acute pain, who are at increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death, may be at an increased risk of having heart attacks and strokes.
"This study highlights the importance of considering these factors when deciding whether or not to take celecoxib, and how to do so in order to make a more informed decision about treatment," said Dr. John D. Lechleiter, a cardiologist and chief of the Cardiovascular Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. "To achieve the best possible outcome, patients should be encouraged to take this medication regularly."
The study also found that people who had used NSAIDs for chronic pain were at a slightly increased risk of experiencing heart attacks, strokes and death compared with those who had not used any NSAID. The results were not statistically significant.

Celecoxib is an oral anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat pain and inflammation in the body. It works by blocking the production of prostaglandins in the body, which can cause inflammation. It also can help reduce pain and inflammation.
Celecoxib has been associated with a small increased risk of heart attacks, strokes and death in patients who are at increased risk for heart disease.
However, the results do not prove that celecoxib is superior to other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in the treatment of chronic pain, or in reducing cardiovascular disease risk.
Celecoxib may be prescribed as a second-line treatment for patients with pain or inflammation in the joints, or for osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
"Celecoxib is an effective non-selective NSAID that is commonly used for the treatment of arthritis pain," Dr. "Therefore, it may be used in the treatment of osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis as an adjunct to NSAID therapy."
The researchers also noted that the use of celecoxib in patients with cardiovascular disease may be associated with an increased risk of stroke, heart attack and death. They also noted that the incidence of heart attack or death in patients taking celecoxib for this indication was less than that in patients taking NSAIDs.
The study was published in the December 2011 issue of Circulation.
